Match Day 14th of Iyekhei Sports Festival witnessed an outrage on Monday after a 3:2 win for Aimenikhare against its counterpart, Irega,
The sporting activities which started on the 15th of November have peaked to the quarter final phase of the competition where Oge and Etetsemhe on Match Day 13th held on to a 1:1 draw and settled the scores in a penalty shootout that saw Etetsemhe winning the day with a 5:4 lead at the first match of the quarter final stage in Ekhei Primary School.
At day 14th of the competition, Aimeonikhare held Irega down to a 3:2 win which ended up in a fierce fracas between the losers and match officials as soon as the final whistle was blown.
Drama started when a controversial second goal was scored by team Aimeonikhare. Though the central referee whistled a goal against Irega in view of the Lineman’s judgment, team Irega protested the decision until calm was restored before the end of the 1st half. The wake of the 2nd half of the match saw Aimeonikhare advancing their lead by 3goals as Irega fiercely clung to 2goals in retaliation. The game however witnessed dangerous tackles cum rough play mostly from team Irega before it came to a halt with the final whistle blown.
Barely had the referee blown the final whistle when team Irega advanced towards the linesman who certified the controversial 2nd goal in favour of Aimeonikhare and mobbed him brutally. The Linesman known as Shaini is currently nursing his wounds and attending to medicare.
However, the Iyekhei Sports Fest Officials have unanimously resolved to hands-off the competition for fear of a repeat of such outburst in view of the fact that the scenario that played out has revealed how unsafe the competition has been security-wise for both spectators and actors in the event of security challenges (such that transpired on Monday). They have condemned the show of shame as played out by team Irega and their supporters stating that they cannot be a part of a competition whose players have no regard for officials and whose organizers have made no provision for security.
Match Day 14th Commissioner, Sir Nuru Able informed AUCHI BLOG that his colleagues and fellow Match Officials have pulled out from the competition for fear of injury or any harm to their lives as a result of what has happened.
Spectators have also expressed their disaffection for how Irega handled defeat in the hands of their counterpart and are calling for a life ban or other stiff sanctions that will serve as deterrence for all actors going forward.
All attempts at reaching Sir Abdulwahab Sanwi the chairman, organizing committee of the competition have proven abortive as at the time of filing in this report.
It is unclear what the fate of the competition is at the moment but AUCHI BLOG is standing by for further update as the events play out.
