Auchi Residents Fault Police Claim Over Death of Officer

By: Dada Ayokhai

Residents of Auchi, Etsako West council area, have faulted the recent press statement issued by the Edo State Police Command, over the recent murder of a police officer in the community.

The state police command had in a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, claimed the late police officer, lnspector Felix Egbon on the said date, "Friday, May, 8, 2020, at about 2100 hrs, the inspector and his team were attacked with guns and other dangerous weapons by unknown hoodlums who emerged from the bush at lyetse Quarters, Auchi, while enforcing COVID-19 curfew imposed by the Federal Government of Nigeria from 8pm to 6am".

But in a rebuttal to the police claim, a cross section of the people, who prefer to remain anonymous, said lyetse Quarters is a residential area with minimal number of commercial stores.

They also queried the claim by the Police of bush at Iyetste Quarters stating categorically that the area is devoid of such.

They insisted most of the houses in the quarters consist of mud, ancient and modern and is a busy place and wondered where the police saw the "mysterious" bush where the so-called hoodlums emerged from to launch an attack.

The residents are, therefore, afraid the police may use the press release as a leeway to arrest innocent people.

Again, residents said much as they sympathize with both the police command and the family of the deceased, they are emphatic, however, that their community does not harbor criminals as the police may want the whole world to believe

They added that the Iyetse Quarters is an open arena within Auchi metropolis and there's no way hoodlums or criminals can find a hiding place to perpetuate their nefarious activities

They urged the commissioner of police to personally visit the area for assessment
