Memories from the grotesque aftermath of the 9th day of March 2022 remain ever fresh in our heads and the loss incurred as a result of that Black Wednesday's avoidable accident breaks hearts repeatedly anytime the mind remembers.

81 days later, we are greeted by the presence of heavy-duty vehicles, trucks carrying livestock (cows, sheep, goats and donkeys), Bitumen, Gas, PMS and Kerosene Tanks 'speeding' through the main hub of economic activities from NEPA junction through Prison road, down to Otaru road and out through Warrake road.

This Friday, even at the time of penning down this piece, the cosmopolitan town of Auchi is flooded by large vehicles, reawakening the pain from the wounds we wish we never had.

Residents, traders and visitors are tensed. Fear is palpable _yet, what's worse is that, despite the talks about puting in place measures to discourage trucks from speeding through town during the day, there is no hope in sight in the eyes of the ordinary people.

Lots of lives were lost, irrevocable injuries were sustained, indelible scars feature prominently on some survivors (both mentally and physically), bread winners were buried as a result (placing their beneficiaries in anguish), sources of livelyhood met woeful ends on that black Wednesday yet, almost 3months on, nothing tangible has been done to assure our people that affliction shall not happen again.

Should there be any more incidence of accident, such that happened on Wednesday the 9th of March, the ordinary people may not take it likely or wish it away like the previous ones. I am afraid the people may have no choice than to take laws into their hands by any means within their immediate control in the heat of the moment. The aftermath of such instinctive action is better left to be imagined.

Before the last accident, I warned, I wrote and did what a concerned youth should do but all my efforts were met by a seeming 'conspiracy of silence' on the matter until a truck carrying BUA cement rammed into people and vehicles in the heart of town. The rest is history.

Again, The Community's Eye having seen much this Friday, having lend his ears to the various complaints sent in by observers of the heightened surge in the numbers of Trucks in Town, is calling on the relevant authorities to as a matter of urgency begin work and give the people a sense of responsibility and belonging in view of forestalling any avoidable calamity that could result from speeding trucks plying Auchi to bypass the clog on Auchi-Benin Expressway.
