Following Government’s lockdown order that led to the shutdown of businesses all over the world in view of curtailing and containing the covid-19 pandemic, a lot of effort has been geared towards ensuring that the adverse effects of hunger occasioned by the lockdown especially on the vulnerable is brought minimally to bare.
Both public and private entities as well as concerned individuals have contributed their quota in varying forms and quantities to the course of providing relief to cushion the shock of a dwindling economy on the poor and vulnerable.
To this end, Hon. Umar Abduljelil, the Executive Vice Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council has from his personal purse began the distribution of palliatives across his PPA to ensure that his beat adds up to that of every other well meaning Son and Daughter of Afenmai for the good of man and the Glory of God.
He informed AUCHI BLOGspot that the programme which began on the 30th of April was borne out of the intent to complement ongoing efforts, touch those who may not have been touched in the spirit of giving and more so, aid fasting Muslims in the Holy month of Ramadhan.
When asked if the palliatives where meant for loyalists of the ruling All Progress Congress in Etsako West, Abduljelil said,
“This is not a time to be sentimental along political, religious and ethnic lines. It will be inhuman for anyone with the ability and capacity to make people’s suffering less painful to resort to cheap party sentiments in dire times like this.
Firstly, we are humans before any other thing. If there’s anything I’ve learnt from the covid-19 experience, it is the simple fact that we are all connected and need each other irrespective of region, religion, party affiliation and what-have-you.
These palliatives are for people. Real people in need. Those who can no longer open up for businesses as a result of the pandemic. The vulnerable.
This is devoid of politics and is more of being humane. Anyone who thinks this is another political point-scoring tactic should be ashamed of his/her thoughts especially when these concerns the welfare of our people.
No politics please.”
He encouraged those with the capacity to help the needy to do so in view of the harsh realities of the times being experienced, stating that the lockdown order is a painful pill to swallow but with humanitarian services offered, the vulnerable ones will be able to cope.
“I’m using this medium to appreciate those who have been doling out palliatives. Nothing is small nor too big to give. We all must play our parts in the fight against covid-19 to ensure success at the end.
So, while our people are staying at home, those with the capacity to give must do so for the sake of God and not for cheap popularity and worldly gains.” He said.
He further encouraged AUCHI BLOGspot to use her information communication fora to connect the people of Afenmai towards bringing home the benefits inherent in unity, stating that when there is unity beyond whatever boundaries there are, development is engendered and life becomes easy and beautiful.
