A confirmed covid-19 case has been recorded in Warrake, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State on Sunday and is now in ISTH for treatment.

A report from Mr. Macauley Ifijen, Chief Press Secretary of Owan East Local Government Council confirmed that the case was that of a man who was said to have traveled down from Jos.

Contrary to claims that the NCDC came with 2 ambulances to convey the patient away for treatment, the CPS stated that efforts geared at reaching the Nigerian Center for Disease Control yielded no positive results until concerted efforts were made by health officials through the Chairman of the Owan-East Local Govt. Council to convey the patient for treatment.

We had a suspected case at Ihievbe even before on Sunday’s incidence and according to the Local Govt. Health Response Team, the first test came out negative but the patient is still at the quarantine center.

This other one that happened on Sunday, it was the people in the environment (where the patient lives) that raised an alarm that so so person came and the person is sick.

We called NCDC’s helpline, they didn’t come until the LG boss, Hon. Andy Osigwe mandated Mr. Solomon in charge of the Local Govt.’s Centre for Disease Control, Lassa fever unit and his team to get the patient the needed attention. He (the chairman) was even the one that chattered the ambulance that took the patient to Irrua Specialist” he said.

Fears are being expressed over a possible spread of the viral infection from the index case to her contacts, relatives and beyond the boundaries of the Local Govt. given that majority of people in the rural area which is not up to a 5minute drive from Auchi Sacred Kingdom the Nodal town in Edo North, do not believe in the reality of covid-19.

Mr. Macauley’s response to the issue via a facebook post expressed worry about the attitude of locals in respect of the deadly corona viral infection, “unbelief is the problem we are facing in the local government. We have created much awareness even through the traditional rulers and religious leaders but most them still believe covid-19 is not real…

Concerning measures taken to ensure that the virus is contained in the area, the CPS informed AUCHI BLOGspot that Hon. Andy Osigwe, Executive Chairman of Owan East has given a standing order to the LG's Health response team to in collaboration with the NCDC conduct a total screening of the patient's contacts and relatives as well as everyone in the area where the patient lives. He posited that the Honorable Chairman has not relented in sensitizing the people of Owan East despite the problem of unbelief in the area.

, “Our response team has contacted the NCDC and they assured us that they will screen people around the quarter where they picked the patient,” he concluded.

The patient's wife and son are at the point of filing in this report negative for covid-19.

This is a call on all Afenmai people to be cautious; obey the WHO, NCDC and Government’s precautionary measures to help in breaking the chain of transmission of the monstrous menace, covid-19.
