A delegation of Nigeria Erosion and Watershed
Management Project (NEWMAP) has paid a visit to Auchi the headquarters of Etsako
West Local Government Area on Thursday in view of accessing the nature of
damage done and working out modalities to commence repair of same.
The delegation informed Hon. Imonofi Inusa,
Chairman of EWLGA that they were on ground to consult with stakeholders in the
area and critically access modalities for the eventual kickoff of construction
work on the Igbe Erosion Control Project which is slated for commencement before
the close of January 2020.
The team was however not happy with the way
people of the area have dealt with gully signs stating that poor maintenance
culture of the residents therein has contributed in no small measure to the
adverse effects of runoff that has culminated into gullies and more, but were
optimistic that their meeting with the people is one situation assessment
protocol that will yield better results when activities at reworking the road
commences.
The NEWMAP delegates however appealed for ample
cooperation from the Local Government officials present and the people of the
area in terms of logistics and security, stating that these are necessary and
key to successfully completing the project for the good of all. They also
assured everyone of a well thought out compensation plan for buildings that may
be affected by the time the project takes off.
Chairman of the Local Government Area could not
hide his elation in view of the fact that plans were already on ground to put
an end to the suffering of the people and make the ecological disaster in Igbei
axis a thing of the past. He reiterated that Auchi being the commercial nerve
center of Etsako West cannot be downplayed in terms of her social, economic and
political status in the scheme of things and as a result pledged his unreserved
and unwavering support to cooperate with all stakeholders involved in ensuring
that the project is executed.
“…the local
government cannot but complement the efforts of the state government towards
addressing the Igbe erosion gully challenges which has been of grave concern to
the people.” He said.
While stating that the execution of people
oriented projects is the essence of governance, he appreciated the administration
of Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy Hon. Philip for deeming it important to allay
the fears of the people of Etsako west Amongst other commendable projects
scattered all over the state.
Earlier in the Month of January 2020, at the
Auchi Day Celebration Event, the executive governor while addressing His Royal
Highness, the Otaru together with the people of Auchi stated that the menace of
water erosion in Igbei axis will soon become a thing of the past as efforts are
now geared towards ensuring that the project is facilitated and driven for the
benefit of all.
It is hoped that with the assessment done by
NEWMAP, a body saddled with the responsibility of tackling the menace of land
erosion and degradation, coupled with the anticipated eventual reengineering of
the road and water ways, the adverse effects occasioned by erosion will come to
a halt
