Preparations towards the 9th edition of Auchi Day kicked off on the 28th of December 2019 at the Ikelebe Sports’ Arena with the Otaru’s Football Competition.

The tournament which began with the match between Utsogun and Iyekhei teams saw Utsogun as the winner with a lone goal ahead her opponent in the second half. The goal was netted by George Okolie popularly known as Nnamenze with a classic heading.

The event which marks the first activity for the commencement of the oncoming Auchi Day slated for January 8th of January 2020, was declared open by the Otaru of Auchi Sacred Kingdom who expressed his optimism about how prepared the organizers of the event are and the potential of football to foster peace and unity amongst people.

His Royal Highness, Alhaji Haliru Momoh (Ikelebe III) expressed elation over the result of the opening match and has enjoined officials of the match to be fair in their duties to enable the best team emerge victorious on the field of play.

The commentator, Mr. Braimah Jafar while expressing his satisfaction over the organization of the match by the Auchi Day Football Committee, stated that he expects the best team to emerge victorious as earlier expressed by the King but however, he wishes that the players should imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship in the ensuing games.
I am happy that from the results of today’s match no injuries were recorded. I wish that at the end of the tournament no one will sustain any injuries from bad tackles. The handlers of these young players representing the various villages in Auchi should ensure that the boys are disciplined enough to understand that though this is a competition, they must ensure that they toe the path safety so that all will be in good shape to celebrate Auchi Day come January 2020.” He said.

He also expressed dissatisfaction over the nature of the field of play, stating that the uneven nature of the pitch was a challenge that relevant authorities must look into to savage. He seized the opportunity in the course of his commentary to call on the Local Government Chairman, Honorable Imonofi Inusa to use his good office to ensure that the Ikelebe Sport’s Arena is fixed to improve the game of football for the boys and the people of Etsako West.

The first goal scorer, Nnamemze has also expressed joy having earned his team a clear three points on top of the table on the first day of the competition.
I’m very confident that my team will emerge the winners of this 9th tournament because my coach and the rest members of the team have prepared really hard to earn this win. You can see that we’ve got quality players and the team is focused and with that I’m positive we will lift the championship cup.” He concluded.


Day 2 will feature matches between Igbei and Aibotse by 9a.m while Akpekpe will go against Usogun by 4pm on Sunday the 29th of December 2019 at Ikelebe Sports’ Arena a.k.a Public Field.
